Whether you are or not religious, Easter processions in Andalusia will not leave you indifferent. This moving, outstanding display of fervour is a must if you happen to be in Spain at that time. Some of the most spectacular processions you can see take place in Granada. They wind slowly around the streets, climb the slopes of the Albaicin and the Sacromonte, walk in silence through the centre, with lifelike statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary in mourning, led by a brotherhood each with its own history and stories. Among them one stands out: El Cristo de los Gitanos (The Christ of the Gypsies). Each Easter Wednesday, an impressive mixture of religion and popular tradition, sets the gypsy neighbourhood and its surrounding slopes literally on fire!
