The 12th Eurovision Song Contest took place at Großer Festsaal der Wiener Hofburg in Vienna, Austria. The presenter became confused whilst the voting was taking place, and declared the United Kingdom's entry to be the winner before the last country had announced their votes. The winning entry "Puppet on a String" had one of the widest margins of victory ever witnessed in the competition; it garnered more than twice as many votes as the second place song. Denmark chose not to participate again and left the contest not to return until 1978.
